The memory
You’d climb onto the terrace with your cousins, friends and half the neighbourhood. Someone had the spool. Someone had snacks. Someone had somehow managed to get the music system working. The sky filled with colour. Kites everywhere. Tricolours everywhere. Someone shouted kaata! and suddenly everyone was looking up. The music kept playing. The wind picked up. The afternoon disappeared. You didn’t need to understand the history of Independence Day to understand that this was your country, your neighbourhood, your people, your day. For a few hours, the whole sky belonged to everyone.
